So you haven’t jailbroken your phone, and the App Store doesn’t have some apps that you need. Or you have jailbroken your phone, and installer doesn’t have some of the apps that you need. Either way, here are the top 8 iPhone Web Apps.

1. Digg (5 out of 5)

digg_shot The Digg iPhone app allows you to use the social news website Digg on your iPhone in a friendly manner. It shows you the top stories on the Digg front page showing 10 at a time. It loads quickly and effortlessly, and even lets you login, and Digg stories by simply tapping on the number of current Diggs.

One of the things that origionally made the Digg iPhone web app very annoying was the fact that it only showed you the top 5 comments, and if you wanted to view more, you had to browse to the actual Digg.com website. They have however recently fixed this, and you can now tap “Load more comments” to get a further 5 and so on. This does cut down on the load time. However, you still can’t Digg or Submit comments unless you browse to the full website.

2. Ping.fm (5 out of 5)

pingfm_shot Ping.fm allows you to post short messages to Twitter, Pownce, Jaiku, and a load of other sites at the same time, without having to browse to each one and submit the same message individually. The app itself is really lightweight and simple, it’s also very quick.

Alternatively, you can actually send an email to Ping.fm using Mail on the iPhone, and in certain countries, even send an SMS to the site. Save it as an icon on your springboard and it’ll encourage you to post updates more often, and keep in contact with all your friends, no matter what site they prefer to use.

3. iRibbit.com (4 out of 5)

iRibbit is an eBay certified app for the iPhone to use eBay. If you use eBay a lot, this wraps everything into a nice little package. See your current bids and sales, and also watched items. Bid more, read messages…etc. Very useful.

4. PicoWiki (4 out of 5)

PicoWiki allows you to setup your own wiki, and is extremely easy to use. Even as a note-taker this web app is always useful in one way or another. You could use it for keeping accounts of stuff in your business, or maybe setup a personal wiki of information for your next school exam.

5. BBC iPlayer (4 out of 5)

iplayer_iphone BBC iPlayer for the iPhone lets you watch your favourite BBC shows, such as Top Gear or The Apprentice) on your iPhone where ever you are, so long as you have a WiFi connection (or 3G connection if you have the iPhone 3G).

It’s layout is really simple and it looks stunning. Sorry Yanks, but it’s UK only unless you have access to a UK VPN.

6. Tic Tac Toe / Noughts and Crosses (3 out of 5)

It’s exactly as the name suggests. Play Tic Tac Toe against the computer with 4 levels. Sadly you can’t play against other people, but none the less, a time killer.

7. iGoogle (3 out of 5)

googleiphoneinterface Get the best of Google on your iPhone, including Google Calendar, Google Reader and a better functioning Gmail than the Mail app. All you need to do is browse to Google like usual and it should automatically load the iPhone version and give you a really good looking interface with most the features of Google itself.

8. TinyTube.net (3 out of 5)

It’s not really an iPhone web app, but it does fit the iPhone nicely. It allows you to watch videos from video sites other than YouTube on your phone, so if there’s a video on Revver or something you would like to watch, you just need to tap in the URL, or Video Name.

It allows you to pick between WiFi and EDGE quality and also works on most other handsets.

(Warning, also allows you to view pornography websites, so may not be suitable for people of all ages)
